Third Gulf Power Solar Farm Coming to Jackson County

Gulf Power’s third solar energy center in Jackson County should be online by the end of 2021. The 440-acres Blue Springs Solar Energy Center will generate 74.5-megawatts of quiet, zero-emissions energy, enough to power 15,000 homes annually. This is a reduction in emissions equivalent to removing 26,000 cars from the road every year.

“As part of FPL, we’re ushering in a more sustainable future for Northwest Florida by delivering cleaner, lower-cost energy, and increasing reliability while keeping costs down for our customers,” said Mike Spoor, Gulf Power vice president. “With each solar farm that we build, we’re reducing our carbon footprint and providing cleaner air for our region, ensuring we keep Northwest Florida beautiful for generations to come, while also benefitting the local economy with the contribution of hundreds of thousands of additional tax dollars.”

Currently, approximately 11 percent of Gulf Power’s energy mix is from renewable sources that include four active solar fields. Gulf Power’s Blue Indigo Solar Energy Center, also located in Jackson County, has been online since April 2020. Solar farms are virtually silent, require no water for operation or maintenance, and solar arrays sit low to the ground. The solar energy center does not require onsite staff to operate, so it will not bring more traffic to the area after construction.
